COLUSA, CA (MPG) – Just a week after winning the 6-A CIF football championship, seven players from that roster made the transition to basketball when the Colusa RedHawks hosted their 42nd Annual Georgia Raczniak Tournament that ran from Dec. 14-16.
Yet, with a lack of time on the court combined with the unrelenting schedule that left little time for rest, the RedHawks ultimately fell 32-47 to the Sutter
Huskies in the championship game of their home event.
Despite having beaten the Huskies 52-42 four days earlier, Sutter was able to exact its revenge starting from the get-go last Saturday evening when they jumped out to a 21-5 first quarter lead and never looked back.
With the Huskies shooting 50 percent from the floor and dogging the RedHawks on defense, Colusa struggled with their shots tallying just 10 points
at the half.
And while the RedHawks improved their offensive performance in the second half, they were limited to single attempts by the Huskies, who dominated the glass as well.
All-Tournament selection Landon Humphrey led the team in the loss with nine points and nine rebounds, while Isaiah Travis ended the game with eight points and seven boards.
Although disappointed with the result, Colusa turned in strong efforts in its first two games by downing Williams 73-52 in the opener, and then following up with a 59-43 win over Corning.
Ten different RedHawks broke into the scoring column against the Yellowjackets led by Humphrey’s 19 points.
Travis recorded a double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds, while Seth Kalisuch, who also got an All-Tournament nod, finished with 10 points in addition to dishing out five assists.
Against Corning in its second game of the tournament, Humphrey paced Colusa with 17 points, with Kalisuch dropping in 14 points and Brayden Newgard adding another 10 points.
In the paint, Travis accounted for six points and 10 rebounds, while Luke Kalfsbeek had a nine-point, seven-rebound performance.
Also participating in the tournament was Williams and Pierce, who squared off against each other in the game for 7th place.
It was the ‘Jackets coming out on top 49-43 behind 15 points from Diego Ambriz, 13 from Daniel Brunner and 12 from Kyden Bowen.
Bowen, the Yellowjackets’ AllTournament pick, tossed in 22 against Colusa and
then went for 18 in a second round 27-82 loss to Western Sierra.
For the Bears, who dropped games to Sutter 36-62 and Yreka 43-67, Alfonso Orozco earned All-Tournament honors.
Colusa (7-4) hit the road this week in contests against Gridley and Las Plumas, while Williams is off until Jan. 9 and Pierce (3-6) hosts Orland on Dec. 20 before resuming play at Dixon’s Ram Jam on Dec. 27.
