‘Jacket boys claim MVL crown

With wins over CORE Butte and Biggs last week, the Williams varsity boys basketball team captured the Mid-Valley League championship for the first time since 2017.

Last Wednesday saw the Yellowjackets put a 72-33 beating on visiting CORE Butte as five players finished in double figures.

Leo Trujillo led the ‘Jackets with 17 points and eight rebounds, while Kyden Bowen added 13 points.

Turning in another solid effort was Brian Rosales with 11 points, nine rebounds, and five steals.

Johnny Alcaraz and Daniel Brunner had 10 points apiece against the Lynx.
Williams (19-6) closed out league play in Biggs on February 10 by outscoring the Wolverines 71-58, although no statistics were provided by the Pioneer Review print deadline.

Coach Jeff Lemus said his team took care of business against the Wolverines and is now looking forward to its Northern Section Division V playoff match up against the Trinity Wolves.

“We played well against Biggs,” Lemus said. “But we are eager for the Trinity game. Our first round bye gives us some extra time in the gym and the boys are focused.”

The No. 3 seeded Yellowjackets (19-6) will square off at home against the No. 6 Wolves (20-8) on February 17. ■
