‘Jacket boys win seven straight

Maxwell’s Noel Velazquez defends against the Yellowjacket’s Brian Rosales in a game on Jan. 31.

After dropping their Mid-Valley League opener to Los Molinos on, Jan. 11, the Williams boy’s basketball team has gone on a seven game tear, including victories over Maxwell and Hamilton City last week.

On the road against county rival Maxwell on Jan. 31, the Yellowjackets broke the game open in the second quarter and went on to a 68-50 win over the Panthers.

Kyden Bowen provided the spark for the ‘Jackets in that second period as he drained three shots from beyond the arc then posted a season high 20 points for the night.

Maxwell did make a run in the third quarter, outscoring the Yellowjackets 17-15, but it was enough to make up the deficit.

Joining Bowen with a 20-point effort for the ‘Jackets was Brian Rosales, while Leo Trujillo finished with 18 points.

As for the Panthers, who handled the Yellowjacket backcourt pressure nicely, they could not consistently convert those opportunities to points on their end of the court.

Dillon Dry led the way with a team-high 16 points, while three others also finished in double figures, including Noel Velazquez with 13 points, Cale Kuska with 11 points, and Cristian Lara with 10 points.

In its second game of the week, Maxwell bounced back at home for its fifth win in its last six games when it downed CORE Butte 67-45, and now sits second in the MVL.

This week, Williams (17-6, 7-1) played its final home game of the regular season on Wednesday against CORE Butte before traveling to Biggs on Friday.
