County volleyball players earn postseason accolades

Williams’s Trinity Tungasmita

With the completion of fall sports this past November, postseason volleyball honors have been released.

Topping the list of recipients in Colusa County are a pair of seniors in Colusa’s Karsyn Gwinnup and Williams’s Trinity Tungasmita, who were both named to the All-Northern Section third team.

This season, Gwinnup, who played all the way around for the RedHawks, finished the season with 265 kills which was good for eighth in the section, then also accounted for 335 assists, 217 digs, 68 aces and 38 blocks.

As the driving force behind the Yellowjackets, Tungasmita led Williams to a Mid-Valley League championship, and their best finish in nearly 30 years where in the process, she contributed 400 assists, 131 digs, 74 kills, 52 aces and 28 blocks.

In addition to Gwinnup and Tungasmita, eight other local players were recognized for their efforts in league play this season.

Colusa’s Karsyn Gwinnup

It was a banner year for the Yellowjackets (19-8), who saw their setter, Tungasmita, selected as the league’s Most Valuable Player, then had three others named to the All-MVL team.

Junior Mia Rivera played an outstanding season for the ‘Jackets, landing a team high 245 kills, to go along with 122 digs, 52 aces, and 42 blocks.

Also playing an important role in this year’s success was senior Ashley Garcia, who recorded 79 aces, 125 digs, and 118 kills in her final season.

Rounding out the Williams’ contingent was senior Linda Rivera, the Yellowjackets’ anchor in the back row where she made a team high 193 digs.

Maxwell
Mid-Valley League

Despite finishing third in the MVL this season, the Panthers (23-7) went on to successfully defend their Northern Section Division VII title with a win over Chester.

Leading the way for Maxwell was a pair of juniors in Bailee Haywood and Emma Hendrix, the team’s two All-MVL selections.

As the Panthers’ libero, Haywood made 298 digs, averaging nearly four per set, returned 246 serves, then served 64 aces for good measure.

For her part, Hendrix was particularly effective in the front row registering 114 kills and dishing out 164 assists in addition to serving a team-high 88 aces.

Also earning postseason recognition was third year head coach Ashley Krug, who was named the MVL’s Coach of the Year.

Colusa – Sacramento Valley League

Joining Gwinuup on the All-SVL squad for the third place RedHawks (25-11) was junior Elle Faris.

Another all around player, this season Faris finished with 193 kills, then was the team leader in digs and service receptions with 241 and 372, respectively.

Pierce – Sacramento Valley League

It was a tough go of it at times for the Bears (11-20) as they finished fifth in the SVL this year.

Senior hitter Cindy Corona represented Pierce on the All-SVL team, although complete statistics were not available.

Princeton – Pioneer League

Going 5-7 in the PL was good for fifth place for the Eagles who ended this season with a 6-21 overall record.

Senior Sophia Deniz was earned All-League honors, while fellow senior Andrea Cervantes and junior Maddi Hansen received honorable mention recognition.
