Colusa tennis in control of SVL

Colusa’s Antonio Garcia returns a shot during a match on March 16. Garcia has worked his way up the ladder to the No. 4 spot.

In its only match last week, the Colusa RedHawk tennis team traveled to Live Oak on March 29, where it edged the Lions 5-4 to put themselves in the driver’s seat in the Sacramento Valley League.

It was a big win for the RedHawks, who had lost to the Lions in the first meeting between the two squads on March 17.

Yet, Colusa’s win, combined with Live Oak’s loss to league foe Willows, put the RedHawks back on top.

Earning wins last week was No. 2 Leo Bedolla (6-2, 6-4), No. 3 Chris Rodriguez (6-2, 6-0), and No. 4 Antonio Garcia (6-3, 6-3).

Although Bedolla and Rodriguez have played at the top end of the ladder all season, Garcia, a junior, has jumped from the team’s No. 15 spot to his current position in the past two weeks.

In doubles, the No. 1 duo of Bedolla and Asa Smith emerged with a 9-7 victory, while Garcia and partner Rosendo Flores defeated their opponents 8-6 in the No. 3 match.

The RedHawks (3-1) were in Quincy on April 5 to play the Trojans, and will finish the week in a rubber match with the Lions today.
