Last week was a rough one for the Williams Yellowjackets boys’ basketball team, as they once again found themselves short-handed, and as a result dropped two of its last three Mid-Valley League games.
Starting on Feb. 7, at home against Quincy, and able to suit just six players, Williams found itself on the short end of a 61-52 score.
Leo Trujillo led the way with 21 points. Jayr Ramirez contributed 18 points and eight rebounds, but it wasn’t enough to overtake the Trojans.
In their next contest on Feb. 9, the ‘Jackets had cruised to a 10-point advantage when disaster struck after intermission as Trujillo, the section’s leading scorer, went down with a season ending injury.
While it took some time for Williams to recover, they salvaged a 60-57 victory, behind 13 points apiece from Brian Rosales and Miguel Rivera.
Ramirez finished with 10 points, as did Trujillo, who exited the game in the third quarter.
Concluding the regular season in Portola last Friday night, the Yellowjackets fell to the Tigers 74-60, although no statistics were reported.
Williams (14-6) is the third seed in the Northern Section CIF Division V playoff bracket, and after a first round bye will meet the winner between No. 6 Modoc and No. 11 Portola at home on Friday night. ■
