I have literally waited most of my lifetime to visit Italy. It has been my forever bucket list leading item.
Now that I’m within a couple of weeks of marking it off the list, our so-called leaders can’t agree. Not only are travelers being punished, but TSA workers and families are taking the hit for the leaders’ hissy fits.
I don’t know about the rest of the country, but I’m more than annoyed. These people were elected by us to make our lives run smoothly. I feel like a political pawn instead of a valued American citizen.
This is ridiculous.
There are families suffering more than me. I’m concerned about my plans and the saved trip money at risk. Meanwhile, families are going without paychecks, ruining their credit and are at risk of losing homes.
Shame on the politicians. It’s time to put their constituents first and think less about their own political careers.
The phrase “of the people, by the people, for the people” is a famous description of democracy, most notably used by U.S. President Abraham Lincoln in his 1863 Gettysburg Address. It encapsulates the core principles of popular sovereignty: that a legitimate government’s power originates from its citizens, is exercised through their representation and exists to serve their collective welfare.
Isn’t it time to recapture that spirit when governing?
Hopefully, by the time this is published, they will have come to an agreement. The government shutdown will have passed, people will be back at work, I’ll be packing for Italy and I can say life is good today.
