When I was a little first grade student at Grand Island Elementary in Grimes, my teacher was Miss Wilsey.
I remember her as being so pretty and so kind. We loved her.
At lunchtime, she would line us up by the classroom door so that we could say table grace before marching off to the cafeteria. “God is great and God is good. We thank him for this food,” we would recite each day. It’s a wonderful memory that has stayed with me all of these years.
Can you imagine the turmoil that this simple loving gesture would cause today?
Sadly, we couldn’t do it now.
Years later, when I returned to Colusa County, Miss Wilsey – now Mrs. Sankey – was still there. Even in her golden years, she was still the beautiful woman of my childhood memories.
I read this week that Lila Lee Sankey had passed. She left behind many former students, friends, and family that will miss her dearly. But, she lived a wonderful life and left a good mark on this earth.
Wouldn’t it be nice if we all could leave behind a legacy such as she did?
Yesterday, my sister Ann celebrated her birthday. Her daughter Dena hosted a surprise party for her at her Lincoln tearoom, The Tea Nook.
I saw pictures of the family gathered to celebrate, and it looked wonderful.
As I write this, today is Super Bowl Sunday. I’m not a fan of football, so I’m not too excited. However, our Luther League kids sell and deliver Super Subs. They’ve been doing it since my kids were members. It’s a great way for them to raise money and to learn responsibility.
Life is good today. ■
