Maxwell 44 – Redding Christian 14

PALO CEDRO, CA (MPG) – Maxwell started the game off strong against the Lions and never looked back as it pushed its record to 3-0 with a victory on the road.

“This was the best game we played in a long time,” said Coach Lane Davis. “We definitely came out of the gate better, but what I’m most pleased with is how few penalties we had.  That shows discipline.”

Erik New had another big game for the Panther offense, carrying 17 times for 139 yards and three touchdowns, as did Noel Velazquez completed 10 of 13 passes for 201 yards and three touchdowns in addition to rushing eight times for 48 yards.

Tanner Vierra caught three passes for 60 yards, two of which were touchdowns, Walter Avery hauled in five passes for 77 yards and Cristian Lara made the most of his one reception turning it into a 60-yard touchdown.

For the Maxwell defense, New had a team-high seven tackles, while Eddie Izquierdo made six tackles including a safety in the fourth quarter, while Vierra intercepted a pass.

Looking to make it four in a row, the Panthers are in Mt. Shasta City tonight to take on the Bears.

Pierce 15 – Del Campo 31

FAIR OAKS, CA (MPG) – Although taking on a team from a school roughly four times its size didn’t end in the Bears’ favor, it was another good test for the team according to head coach Anthony Tapia.

“We had them on their toes early in the game, but we missed some opportunities and didn’t capitalize on others,” Tapia said. “In the second half we gambled every drive and it didn’t work out. We wanted to win the game but it didn’t go our way. I’m very proud of our team though and I can’t say that enough. We saw what we wanted from them and now we have to build on this moving forward.  We hope this will have us ready heading into a big rivalry game and league play.”

Damian Navarro and Drew Burnum each scored rushing touchdowns for Pierce although no other statistics were available.

Tonight the Bears (2-1) travel to Williams (2-1) to continue the Rice Bowl rivalry.
