County to respond to Grand Jury

The Colusa County Board of Supervisor has acknowledged receipt of the 2022-2023 Grand Jury report and will begin crafting their response. Board Chairman Kent Boes on Aug. 15 appointed Supervisors Merced Corona and Janice Bell to work with appropriate department heads to prepare a response, which will then be presented to the full board for final approval before being submitted to Colusa County Superior Court.

The Grand Jury tours and reports on the Colusa County Jail and Tri-County Juvenile Hall annually, typically finding the recognizable shortcomings that only new facilities will rectify.
The Board recently approved the conditional construction contract for its new Colusa County Jail facility, with groundbreaking expected this fall, officials said.

“The latest cost estimate to build the new jail is $36.6 million and is significantly higher than the $25 million estimated last year,” the Grand Jury noted in its report. “Recent inflation has contributed to this substantial cost increase.”

The Grand Jury did recommend the Jail increase educational opportunities, utilizing the Colusa County Library and Colusa County Office of Educations resources. They also noted the food lacked appeal and variety.

Since the Grand Jury toured the Juvenile Hall and Camp Singer, the new Tri-County Juvenile facility has been completed and is in full operation.

Colusa County has 90 days from receipt of the report to file a response. County officials estimate the response will be completed and approved before mid-October. H
