Man shot in altercation charged

Caleb W. Wills, 43, of Princeton, is scheduled to enter a plea on Monday on charges stemming from the altercation on Jay Street on Dec. 21, which resulted in him being shot by the resident.

District Attorney Matthew Beauchamp has charged Wills with felony assault with a deadly weapon and other misdemeanor crimes, including aggravated trespassing, after Wills allegedly attacked an individual with a blunt object during an argument, before turning on the resident who tried to intervene.

Melvish Sharma, who shot Wills in self defense, has been cleared of wrongdoing, officials said.

Following the Jay Street incident, the Colusa County Sheriff’s Office arrested Wills a few days later on Dec. 29, after the Sheriff’s Office responded to East Clay Street regarding a person, later identified as Wills, exiting a crawl space from under a residence.

The resident reportedly confronted Wills, who is believed to have spent the night under the house, in the backyard of the residence and subdued him until law enforcement responded, officials said.

Wills has been charged with several misdemeanors, including aggravated trespass, in that case, court records indicate.

Willis has a lengthy criminal history in Glenn and Colusa counties, and was on probation for domestic violence and vandalism following his conviction in November.

Willis was previously convicted and sentenced to one year in prison and five years probation in Glenn County in 2013, after pleading no contest to assault likely to cause bodily injury and resisting a peace officer, in a plea deal that dismissed charges of discharging a firearm inside an inhabited dwelling.

On Tuesday, Colusa County Superior Court Judge Elizabeth Ufkes Olivera appointed Marysville attorney Kelsi Wheeler as Wills’ public defender.

Wills is currently in custody at the Colusa County Jail.
