WILLIAMS, CA (MPG) – A symbol of peace and remembrance has a new place of prominence at the Colusa County Office of Education’s Education Village following the rededication of its Peace Pole on Sept. 25.

Originally placed at the Education Village on Sept. 21, 2017, in recognition of the International Day of Peace, the Peace Pole is an international symbol bearing the message, “May Peace Prevail on Earth,” in several languages. The pole was recently relocated from the Education Village courtyard to the front lawn, where it is more visible and accessible to students, families, staff and community members.

Colusa County Superintendent of Schools Chuck Wayman welcomed attendees and led the formal rededication. The ceremony honored fallen soldier Pfc. Rueben “Boy” Lopez, U.S. Army infantry, and Desert Storm veteran Spc. Bradley J. West, whose names are displayed on the Peace Pole.

“Today’s rededication of the Peace Pole gives us an opportunity to reflect on its enduring message: ‘May Peace Prevail on Earth,’” Wayman said. “Through this rededication, we recognize their service, honor their sacrifices, and ensure their names and contributions continue to be remembered by our community.”

The Williams Junior-Senior High School Cadet Corps participated in the ceremony with the presentation of colors, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance led by Colusa VFW Post 2441.

Community members Barbara Hankins and Gloria Estrada assisted with planning the rededication ceremony. Estrada also provided refreshments for attendees following the ceremony.

Students contributed to the occasion through a special art show featuring artwork from the Williams Children’s Center, Williams Preschool Learning Center, S. William Abel Academy and Coastal Buttes Academy. Art teacher Bob Kirkman assisted with planning the art show, providing students with an opportunity to participate in the day’s message of peace and community.
