Track Athletes Set Personal Bests at Section Meet

COTTONWOOD, CA (MPG) – Participating among the Northern Section’s best at the championship meet on May 23 at West Valley High School, a number of Colusa County track athletes set personal records in their respective events.

Topping the list was Pierce’s Thomas Sweet who posted a mark of 44-01.5 in the triple jump to come away with a silver medal, then also was sixth in the long jump after going 21-02.5.

Colusa’s Abby Coronado threw four feet longer than her previous best to earn bronze in the discus with a toss of 105-03, while teammate Itzel Cruz crossed the line in a time of 1:01.77 to finish fourth in the 400 meter race.

Maxwell’s Tanner Vierra was fifth in long jump, ending with a career best jump of 21-06.

Rounding out the county contingent in establishing new records was the Pierce 4×100 relay team comprised of Noah Sucevich, Sweet, Jonathan Vasquez Hernandez and Nate Macintosh that continued to shave off time setting a new school record after running a 43.58, which was good for fifth.

Despite turning in their best performances, the meet marked the end of the season for the aforementioned athletes, as only the event winner qualified for the 106th CIF State Track and Field Championships, which will be held May 29 and 30 at Buchanan High School in Clovis.
