MAXWELL, CA (MPG) – Maxwell FFA member Makenna Dunlap has been named the 2026 Superior Region winner for the inaugural John Justin “Standard of the West” Award, a statewide recognition presented through a partnership between California FFA and Justin Boots.

The award honors FFA seniors who demonstrate leadership, integrity, perseverance, academic achievement and dedication to agriculture, their FFA chapter and their community.

According to California FFA, 44 senior members from across the state applied for the award during its first year. Six finalists were selected statewide, each representing a California FFA region. Dunlap received recognition during the 98th California FFA State Leadership Conference in Ontario in March.

Dunlap, who serves as president of the Maxwell FFA chapter, has remained active in livestock projects and leadership activities throughout her high school career. School and FFA officials said her involvement reflects a commitment to both agricultural education and community service.

“This recognition represents not only my hard work, but also the support of my advisors, family, and chapter,” Dunlap said. “It means so much to be chosen among my peers to represent my region, and I was so incredibly proud to stand on stage as an example of the values FFA has taught me.”

As a regional finalist, Dunlap received a plaque, product gift certificate and a $500 scholarship.

The “Standard of the West” Award was created as part of a new partnership between California FFA and Justin Boots. Organizers said the program aims to recognize students whose work ethic and leadership reflect the values tied to agriculture and western heritage.

“At Justin Boots, we are proud to recognize FFA members who embody the standards we were founded on, hard work, resilience, and the courage to pursue new opportunities,” said Taylor Morton, public relations manager for Justin Boots. “Their dedication and achievements are building a strong foundation for their futures, and we’re honored to be a small part of that journey.”

California FFA officials said the recognition also highlights the continuing impact of agricultural education programs in preparing students for future leadership roles in their schools, communities and industries.
