Track Season Opens at Black Butte Invite

ORLAND, CA (MPG) – Athletes from Pierce and Colusa showed they can compete with the Northern Section’s best after posting a combined seven top three placings at Orland’s Black Butte Invitational on Mar. 7.

 

Overall it was a good day for the reigning NSCIF Division III champion Pierce boys, as Thomas Sweet won the triple jump with a personal best effort of 42-01, while Humberto Esqueda broke the Bears’ school record with a 47-03 toss in the shot put, landing him in second place and JR Figueroa (18.52) took third in the 110 meter hurdles.

 

Sweet also ran a leg on the 4 x 100 relay team, which finished third in a time of 45.71 and included Drew Burnum, Jonathan Vazquez Hernandez and Nathan McIntosh as well.

 

Meanwhile, Colusa made some noise in the distance races with Benji Granados running the 3200 meters in a time of 10:38.97, which was good for second place, in addition to crossing the line third in the1600 meters with a 4:54.36 mark.

 

In the varsity girls division, the RedHawks’ Rajdeep Shoker (13:24.09) was third in the 3200 meters.

 

Both teams return to action today, with Pierce heading to Wheatland for the Roy Crabtree Classic, while Colusa is participating in Corning’s Cardinal Invitational.
