Pierce Wrestling Hosts 1st Ever Match Night

ARBUCKLE, CA (MPG) – Last Wednesday marked a first for the Pierce wrestling program as they hosted squads from Biggs, Esparto, Live Oak, Williams and Winters for a match night, something that had never happened before.

Williams’ Julio Rosales (left) squares off against Pierce’s Chase Friel in Arbuckle on Dec. 18. Friel took the match by pin.

Leading the charge to bring wresting to Pierce High School has been coach Devin Harris, who was more pleased with the outcome of the event as he explained.

“It was surreal to see wrestling mats on the Natalie Corona Gymnasium floor for the first time in history,” Harris said. “The referees had never been to our campus and they were blown away with the home support and the energy in the gym. It was fun to see everyone come together to make this happen and especially nice to be able to honor the senior wrestlers in front of their home crowd in their home gym.”

Pierce’s Pam Vernon battles an opponent from Esparto at the match night hosted by the Bears on Dec. 18.

Familiar territory served the Bears well based on the fact that they came away with 29 wins and just nine losses by the time all was said and done.

While Harris didn’t report any other specific details from the meet, he did recognize the efforts of those who helped pull off the event.

“The meet couldn’t have happened without the tireless support of the volunteers,” said Harris. “A huge shout out to Williams head coach Nik Willis, who has been instrumental in helping us with this event, as well as providing many other inputs and guidance over the last few years as we have set up our program. We are extremely grateful for his leadership, love of the sport and the attention he provides the athletes, regardless of what singlet they wear or what school they represent.”

Williams’ Julian Camarena takes on Beau Lafnear from Live Oak in a match on Dec. 18. Camarena used the “Head & Arm” technique to throw and pin Lafnear.

Pierce wrestlers were at Will C. Wood High School in Vacaville for the Brett Farard Invitational on Dec. 21, then return to the mat on Jan. 3 for the NorCal Wrestling Championships at Anderson High School.
