To honor the 90th anniversary of the Colusa Assembly of God, the church will hold a special two-day celebration, Aug 6-7.
“For over 90 years, Colusa Assembly of God church has been bringing faith and hope to the people of the city and county of Colusa,” said Rev. Ken Edwards, who has led the church with his wife, Candace, since 2016.
In its earliest stages, Colusa Assembly of God came to the community about 100 years ago as “tent revivals” at various locations by Henry and Alberta Schmidt, of Arbuckle, who became Christians after being told their daughter had no hope of recovering from an illness.
Under the leadership of Rev. Joe Stark, Henry Schmidt contracted to build a church at 532 Oak St.
As the congregation grew, the group added a two-story Sunday school and secured another lot for expansion.
Edwards said the church was officially incorporated on March 29, 1932, and was affiliated with the National Assemblies of God. A new church, under the leadership of Rev. Jerry Smith, was constructed in 1989 at its current location, 1747 State Highway 20.
Smith and his wife, Janice, former pastors of the Colusa Assembly of God and missionaries in Guayaquil, Ecuador, will be speakers at the celebration.
The anniversary celebration will include a missions banquet at 6 PM on Saturday, Aug. 6. Tickets for the catered dinner are $15 and Janice Smith will be the featured speaker, which will have a mission emphasis, Edwards said.
On Sunday, the special anniversary service will feature Jerry Smith, who will give a presentation on the history of the church.
The service, which begins at 10 AM, will include special music and presentations. The public is invited to attend.
At present, the Colusa Assembly of God is focused on loving and caring for the community. A monthly food distribution meets the needs of several hundred people. The new Hope Center provides food, clothing, life-skill assistance, and computer access for Tele-health and job searches. Band of Brothers is a local Bible Study and fellowship group for men.
“It is a privilege for us to serve this community both spiritually and emotionally,” Edwards said. “We know the answer to the problems in life is Christ. And the power to love God, love people, and serve our community comes from him as well. We desire to work together with our city to make (Colusa) and this county an even finer place to live. Please come and join with us as we celebrate what began many years ago, and is still today providing faith and hope to many people.” ■
