RedHawks extend season streak

Colusa’s Luke Kalfsbeek slides safely into second base in the RedHawks’ 9-2 win over Paradise on March 23. Kalfsbeek played a big role in Colusa’s three wins last week.

A shutout of Gridley followed by a sweep of Paradise last week pushed the Colusa baseball team’s record to 13-0 this season leaving them the No.1 ranked team in the Northern Section’s Division IV and No. 3 in the entire section behind only Pleasant Valley and Chico.

Colusa led off last week with a 10-0 victory in run-rule shortened, non-conference game against Gridley at Raley Field on March 21.

Nine different RedHawks recorded hits led by Nick Price and Luke Kalfsbeek each of whom doubled.

On the mound Hunter Sines put in four innings of work striking out four and scattering three hits before yielding to Emanuel Frias and Tyler Oliver who each tossed an inning of relief.

Hosting Paradise two days later on March 23 in a Sacramento Valley League contest, Colusa put crooked numbers on the board in the second and fourth innings to blow the game open and come away with the 9-2 win.

Kalfsbeek had a day to say the least, completing four innings of one-hit ball in which he fanned eight then additionally went 3 for 3 with two RBI at the plate finishing a home run short of the cycle.

Ethan Lay had the only other extra base hit, an RBI double for the RedHawks, who had six others reach base via a single.

Colusa also got three strong innings of relief work as Bo Coronado took the hill for the fifth and sixth ahead of Oliver who closed out the final frame.

Making the trek to Paradise last Friday, Colusa proved to be an unwelcome guest as they dismissed the Bobcats 13-2.

Kalfsbeek stayed hot at the plate finishing 3 for 5 with two doubles and six RBI.

It was quite a week for the sophomore who went 7 for 10 with eight RBI over the three games, raising his batting average to .447 and OPS to 1.149.

Price, Frias and Niko Silvas each recorded two hits in the win.

Pitching was again stellar as Lay, the section strikeout leader, put nine more in the book while conceding just two hits over his four innings on the bump.

Frias then turned in two innings of scoreless relief, while Sines wrapped things up in the seventh.

SVL play continued for the league leading RedHawks against Winters this week as they hosted the Warriors on Tuesday before heading south to conclude the season series on Friday.
