When the Maxwell Panthers make their return to the volleyball court this season, it will be a journey of discovery as they seek to fill key positions vacated by graduating seniors. They must also overcome a lack of contacts last year.
A as a result, there will most likely be a learning curve when play begins for the Panthers.
Second year head coach Ashley Krug has an experienced returner in senior setter Paige Vierra to help make the transition easier.

A three-year starter at the position, Vierra handed out 289 assists, made 103 digs and served 77 aces in 79 sets played in 2019.
Vierra will additionally be relied upon to play middle, as will sophomore Emma Hendrix, who will be the other setter in the Panthers 6-2 system.
On the outside, Maxwell will look to Perla Herrera, who returns for her senior season, along with junior Jocelyn Lazarus, who will make her varsity debut.
Others competing for time, in the yet-to-be finalized rotation include seniors Madi Pearson, and Laisha Izquierdo, along with juniors Sydnee Wilson and Audrey Wills.
Another addition to the squad this year will be Bailee Haywood, a sophomore, who brings a considerable amount of club volleyball experience, which and should help solidify the back row.
Having only played five times in last years COVID abbreviated season, a shortage of match experience at the varsity level may present a challenge, as will the Panthers lack of height at the net.
Another adjustment Maxwell will make in 2021 will be joining the seven team Five-Star League that includes small school stalwarts Burney and Redding Christian in addition to Chester, CORE Butte, Los Molinos, and Mercy.
However, with their strong serving and setters who can expedite the offense, the Panthers should compete among their Division VII foes, all of which have enrollments fewer than 100 students.
For Krug, the goal is a simple one, as she explained, ” We need to continue to work to get better and play as a team.
Look for Maxwell to begin that process as they open the season on Aug. 12, in a match against Princeton. –
