After a season in which Colusa went 27-1 and was named the Division V Baseball Team of the Year, it comes as no surprise that CalHi Sports selected the driving force behind the RedHawks success, Coach Eric Lay, as the baseball Small School Coach of the Year.
Generally acknowledged as one of the top coaches in the North State, Lay came to Colusa in the fall 2012 after 11 seasons in Maxwell, immediately guiding the RedHawks to back-to-back section titles, and was in line to win a third with Colusa this season, although COVID protocols prevented the opportunity.
Lay has never had a losing season in Colusa, where his teams have won 20 games or more eight times in his nine seasons at the helm of the RedHawks.
CalHi Sports puts his overall record at 446-101-2 and 183-55-2 in Colusa, cementing his status as one of the best in the state.
