
WILLIAMS, CA (MPG) – Six cross country teams converged on Williams High School last Wednesday afternoon for the first Mid-Valley League meet of the 2023 season.
Included in the field was the host Yellowjackets along with the Maxwell Panthers, both of whom made a strong showing at the event.

In his first race of the year Williams’ Adrian Solis mastered the three-mile course finishing first in a time of 18:31, while teammate Ernie Lemus (19:31) took fourth in his debut.
Two Panthers also cracked the top 10 in the varsity boys race with Walter Avery (20:04) and Robert Waite (21:15) coming in fifth and tenth respectively.
Not surprisingly, the ‘Jackets’ Isabella Santillan topped the varsity girls field, crossing the line in 20:58, then went on to run at the Black Butte Invitational on Sept. 22, where she finished fifth out of 59 competitors in the 5,000 meter course after posting a mark of 24:33.
Williams’ Leonardo Esparza set a blistering pace in the 2-mile JV boys race with a winning time of 11:21, while three Panthers, Vincent Orozco (12:48), Celestino Corona (12:49), and Evan Mathis (12:50), finished in third, fourth and fifth respectively.
In the JV girls contest, Maxwell’s Jayden Karlonas (14:43) was second, ahead of the Yellowjackets’ Lorielle Contreras (16:18) in third.
This week the teams were scheduled to be in Durham on Sept 27 for their second
MVL meet.
