Cross country teams stay the course

Runners take off at the start of the varsity girl’s race on Sept. 28 at the Arbuckle Golf Club.

County cross country athletes from Colusa and Pierce reconvened at the Arbuckle Golf Club, while Williams made its way to Durham last Wednesday to participate in their respective league meets.

In Arbuckle, the RedHawks varsity boys once again dominated the team competition after having five of its members finish in the top 10.

Benji Granados navigated the 5,000 meter course in a time of 19:13, which was good for second place, and was followed by teammates Kevin Sarabia (19:38) in third, Cesar Cruz (20:09) in fifth, Jose Ceron (20:10) in sixth, and Jared Sager (21:49) in ninth.

In the varsity girl’s contest, Colusa freshman Rajdeep Shoker (26:42) took third in her first attempt at the 5,000 meter distance, while sophomore Bella Badaluco (30:10) was sixth in her debut.

Pierce’s Yasmin Szmurlo (30:51) finished in eighth place, with teammate Isabel Alvarado (30:57) right behind in ninth.

Colusa’s JV boys continued to be a juggernaut, claiming the top seven spots, starting with race winner Rafa Avila, who completed 2.1 mile distance in a time of 13:57.

Crossing the line in succession behind Avila was William England (14:15), Karim Cruz (14:25.31), Edwin Fierros (14:25.53), Trenton Griffith (14:30), Luis Flores (14:46, and Brian Hernandez (14:57).

On her home course, the Bears’ Karina Grajedra (17:51) crossed the line first in the JV girl’s race, with Colusa’s Giselle Valdes (17:56), Shaheen Orr (18:01), and Josslyn Garcia (18:18) claiming second, third and fourth, respectively.

Pierce’s Carla Moreno (20:17) was fifth, while the RedHawks’ Makinzie Frank (20:52) was sixth, and Olivia Stever (20:56) was seventh.

In Mid-Valley League action, Williams’ Isabella Santillan (21:35) won the varsity girls race in Durham, with teammate Leslie Pineda (33:02) finishing sixth.

This week, Colusa and Pierce will be in Cottonwood on Friday for the West Valley Invitational, while Williams’ schedule this week had not yet been determined. ■
