Volleyball Roundup: League play continues for county squads

The Bears picked up two Sacramento Valley League wins last week after downing Live Oak and Paradise.

Starting off the week, hosting Live Oak, Pierce made short work of the Lions, prevailing 25-9, 25-10, 25-11 behind Hailey Regnani’s 11 kills and six aces.

Setter Jamie Figueroa handed out 17 assists to direct the attack.

Libero Macey Myers made a game-high 16 digs and served eight aces, while back row mate Tatum Mulqueeney chipped in with nine digs.

Scores and statistics from the match with Paradise were not available prior to the Pioneer Review print deadline.

Sitting fourth in the SVL, Pierce (9-15, 5-3) has a tough task this week, having traveled to face second place East Nicolaus on Tuesday, ahead of its match in Willows against the first place Honkers tonight. ■

Maxwell 1 – Hamilton City 3 (9/24)
Maxwell 3 – Biggs 0 (9/27)

Facing first place Hamilton City last week, the Panthers took a set off the Braves, but couldn’t come any closer as they fell 19-25, 25-21, 12-25, 10-25.

Despite the loss, Maxwell got a good effort on the attack from Fatima Cano, who recorded eight kills and hit at a .533 clip.

Defensively, the Panthers were led by Bailee Haywood with 20 digs and 27 service receptions, and also got strong performances from Kennidy Moss, who tallied 13 digs and 16 receptions, along with Jocelyn Lazarus, who added 10 digs and 17 service receptions.
Maxwell finished last week by sweeping Biggs, although statistics were not available prior to the Pioneer Review deadline.

Now 14-6 overall and 1-2 against Mid Valley League opponents, the Panthers hosted Los Molinos on Tuesday and will play Williams at home tonight in the fourth and final meeting between the two squads this season. ■

Williams 3 – CORE Butte 0 (9/27)
Williams 2 – Hamilton City 3 (9/29)

After starting last week with an easy 25-18, 25-15, 25-10 win over CORE Butte, the ‘Jackets dropped their first Mid-Valley League match 25-21, 22-25, 25-18, 19-25, 13-15 to Hamilton City.

Against the Lynx, Mia Rivera registered 10 kills and six digs. Ashley Garcia accounted for five kills, seven aces and nine digs, while Trinity Tungasmita dished out 19 assists.
Going to five sets for the first time this season against Hamilton City, the Yellowjackets got a huge game from Rivera, who had a game-high 19 kills, and additionally made six blocks and 11 digs.

Tungasmita turned in a noteworthy performance, dispensing 36 assists to go along with seven kills and 16 digs, as did Garcia, with nine kills and 14 digs.

Williams also got a colossal effort from Linda Garcia, who made a game-high 30 digs.
Now a game behind the Braves in the MVL standings, the ‘Jackets (12-7, 3-1) squared off at home against Biggs on Tuesday, and makes the short trip to Maxwell tonight.

Colusa 3 – Durham 1 (9/27)
Colusa 3 – Winters 0 (9/29)

Colusa emerged with a (26-24, 22-25, 25-15, 25-20) win on the road in Durham Sept. 27, after subduing a scrappy Trojan squad.

In the win, Karsyn Gwinnup handed out 19 assists and smashed nine kills, while Carly Simmons and Addison Lay added nine more kills apiece for the RedHawks.

Lexy Avera made 15 digs and tallied 18 service points, including five aces.

No statistics from the match in Winters were available by the Pioneer Review print deadline.

This week, Colusa (18-7, 5-2) was in Gridley for a non-conference match on Monday, traveled to Live Oak on Tuesday, and returns home to face Paradise this evening for SVL matches. ■
