WILLIAMS, CA (MPG) – Traditionally in wrestling, dual matches with up to 14 weight classes are held during the week, while tournaments are usually weekend affairs.

However, in Colusa County where despite gaining popularity, teams don’t have enough wrestlers to fill all the weight classes so as a result for the past three years, Williams, Pierce and this season Maxwell and Colusa, are all participating in match nights, which according to Yellowjacket head coach Nik Willis “gives small teams that cannot fill all 14 weight classes the opportunity for some mid-week match time that otherwise would happen on the weekends at all-day tournaments. Run in a tournament style, a few small teams get together and match their wrestlers up as best they can by weight class and experience level, to get their athletes in one to three matches.”

As such, last Wednesday evening, the Yellowjackets again hosted the teams from Pierce and Maxwell, but this week were also joined by East Nicolaus, Live Oak and Winters.

Willis pointed out some standouts at the event including Ricardo Medina, who went 2-1 along with Kyla Dachler, Emma Gandara, Armondo Medina, Miguel Moreno, Rafael Moreno and Alexis Ocampo each of whom picked up a win.

Meanwhile, Pierce coach Devin Harris was pleased with his squad’s effort in which he is seeing improved decision making, endurance and development both mentally and physically, singling out Miguel Hernandez, Lyzander Barba and Connor Harris.
This week, match night was hosted by the Bears on Dec. 17.
