Life is Good: My Heart Hurts

Today I said goodbye to two of my “adopted” daughters. They are leaving to begin a new life together in Alaska.

Alaska. That’s a long way from North Dakota.

Jodi has been part of our family for the past 27 years. Every family gathering, every holiday and even the sad days when we were losing David, Jodi was there. She was, and still is, one of us.

When she met Robin, it was only natural to welcome her into our family as well.

When they decided to get married, it was my honor to officiate their wedding.

Surrounded by family and friends who have become family, they began their lives together.

Now, as they begin a new chapter and a new adventure, they have chosen to accept positions in Alaska.

I wish them nothing but good things and countless blessings. Yet the selfish part of me is feeling the loss. I’m losing two bonus daughters who will forever hold a place in my heart.

There will be an empty space in our family and two empty chairs at our table.

I’m praying for the girls as they set out, one pulling a U-Haul and the other pulling a camper along the Alaska Highway.

We’ll be praying for them every mile of the journey and long after they arrive.

They call it an adventure. I hope they’ll also find the adventure in occasionally catching a flight back to North Dakota, home and family.

Fingers crossed they’ll be home for Christmas.

Although my Ma Craigo heart hurts, life is good today.
