For well over a decade, the Colusa County Free Library has hosted Family Story Time on Thursday evenings at the main branch library in Colusa. Designed for children of all ages and their caregivers, these sessions are interactive experiences that combine storytelling, movement, music, and simple crafts.
Family Story Time is an opportunity for children to develop early literacy skills while having fun. Listening to stories helps build vocabulary, comprehension, and imagination, while participating in songs and movement activities encourages coordination and social engagement. The combination of auditory, visual, and kinesthetic learning creates a rich environment where children can absorb new concepts naturally.
Each session is thoughtfully themed, giving families a chance to explore different topics and ideas together. Themes might range from seasonal celebrations to animals, nature, or classic tales, keeping each Story Time fresh and engaging. Music and movement are integral parts of Family Story Time. Songs, finger plays, and movement activities add fun and energy to the program and help children develop rhythm, coordination, and memory. Caregivers are encouraged to join in, making it a shared experience that strengthens bonds and creates lasting memories.
After the stories, children can take part in simple crafts that reinforce the theme and allow them to express their creativity. These activities are designed to be easy for young hands while still offering a sense of accomplishment and pride in what they create.
Family Story Time is led by the wonderful Ms. Gaby, the Youth Services Librarian, who makes every session fun, engaging, and accessible for all children. The program is also a place to connect with other families in the community. Children learn social skills through group activities, and caregivers gain ideas for reading and learning at home.
Whether it is a first visit or a regular weekly routine, Family Story Time offers a joyful introduction to the world of books. Families are invited to join the fun, sing, move, create, and discover the magic of storytelling together every Thursday evening at the main branch library at 5:30 p.m.
