Gardeners Corner – February in the Garden

Around Valentine’s Day, apply dormant copper spray to peach and nectarine trees no later than bud swell. Fertilize mature trees and shrubs after spring growth begins. Remove and discard fallen camellia blossoms to reduce petal blight. Do not compost affected material. Fertilize spring blooming and fall planted perennials, and apply mulch three inches deep around plants, keeping it away from stems to conserve soil moisture.

In the vegetable garden, direct seed radishes, beets, chard and peas. Start tomato, pepper and eggplant seeds indoors. Potatoes can also be planted at this time.

Flowers that can be transplanted or direct seeded include snapdragon, candytuft, larkspur, coral bells and stock. Summer blooming bulbs such as dahlias, begonias, gladiolus and lilies can be planted now.

Finish pruning roses and prune summer blooming shrubs during this period.

For pest and disease control, watch for aphids on spring blooming bulbs and remove them with a strong spray of water. As temperatures warm, begin preparing for slugs and snails using traps or pet friendly baits.
