Years ago, we used to buy Christmas trees still wrapped in mesh. We called it buying a pig in a poke (sight unseen).
Now, we’ve done the same thing in picking and buying our little vacation place in California.
The phrase refers to the medieval practice of selling a piglet in a sack (a “poke”), where unscrupulous vendors would sometimes substitute a less valuable animal, like a cat, to defraud unwary buyers.
No worry. I have no doubt our purchase this time will be a winner. I can’t wait to see it and make it our own.
I prefer to look at it as a step in faith rather than a pig in a poke.
This is our last week to pack before heading out next weekend. I love planning and always a road trip. So exciting!
For the last few years we have wintered in Oceanside, California. It’s lovely there, but other than our landlord we didn’t really know anyone.
Going back to Colusa County, California is far more exciting. Friends, family and familiar things are what awaits us there.
No need for a GPS to find my way around the country roads. I felt the same way when I moved back to Beach, North Dakota. Friendship, family and familiar things welcomed me back here as well.
Now we get to have the best of both worlds once again.
Different, yet so much alike.
I truly feel as if I have two homes.
Ironically when I first told North Dakota friends I was returning to California I was questioned why I’d want to be in the big city. Colusa County is just as rural as Beach ND.
No matter which home I am in, life will be good today.
