Cold Enough

By Kathy Craigo Harteis

My late husband David used to have some descriptive terms for how cold it might be.

Those colorful terms  came to mind today as I was pumping gas into my car and it was 13 degrees. Plus, you have to remove your gloves to push the buttons on the pump. So cold.

As much as I love living in North Dakota, it’s times like these that I miss California just a bit.

Yet life goes on. A little cold doesn’t stop us.

The holidays are coming.

I love the traditions. Things that include the grandkids are the best. Cookie day is just around the corner. School Christmas programs are abundant.

It brings back so many memories.

One Christmas long ago my sister Ann and I had the chickenpox (or maybe the mumps). Holding out hope, our mom and grandma continued sewing our costumes for the school program. Sadly we didn’t heal in time to be in it.

The memory I keep of that time is that we were loved enough that Mother and Granny didn’t give up. They kept sewing.

I love seeing the growth and accomplishments of each grandchild. But if I’m being truthful, I dearly miss the little kids they once were. I miss seeing the excitement and wonder each child displayed.

The good news is that we still have the little kid years ahead with 3-year-old grandson  Bodhi.

Life is good today.
