Editorial: The cat is out of the bag

The Colusa County Pioneer Review is up for sale. I understand that this news may come as a shock to some, while others may be confused about the sudden change in direction. I want to take this opportunity to explain the reasons behind this decision and assure you that we are working diligently to ensure the future of our beloved newspaper.

Approximately three weeks ago, I made the decision to list the Colusa County Pioneer Review for sale. Initially, I was in discussions about establishing a non-profit organization to sustain the newspaper. While I was almost ready to initiate that process, I began to have doubts. The reality of being the sole driver in the business, relying on a limited pool of volunteers, and competing for donations alongside other non-profit organizations became apparent. Additionally, the business incurred debt as a result of the adverse impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. As advertising dollars dwindled during the global shutdown, we were forced to secure a loan to keep the publication afloat. If we were to transition to a non-profit structure, I would have had to assume that debt personally, which was not financially feasible for me.

Hence, I made the difficult decision to list the newspaper for sale. Initially, I posted the listing on LinkedIn without expecting much response. A ‘probably delete later” moment.

However, within just a few days, a few interested parties expressed their desire to continue the legacy of the Colusa County Pioneer Review. As we navigate through the process of finding a suitable buyer, please be assured that we are doing everything in our power to keep this newspaper operational.

It is important to acknowledge the tremendous support we received from those who donated and contributed to the non-profit development fund. I want to reassure you that your money is secure with the Community Foundation of Colusa County and will be returned in the event of the sale. Your generosity has been deeply appreciated, and we are committed to ensuring that your contributions serve the intended purpose.

The future of the Colusa County Pioneer Review will need to exist without me at its helm, as I no longer possess the necessary resources to sustain this publication. I am exhausted and moving forward gets harder each day. However, I am hopeful that we will find a buyer who shares our passion for community journalism and will continue to provide the invaluable service of keeping our community informed and connected.

I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to the readers, advertisers, and supporters who have been a part of this journey. The Colusa County Pioneer Review has been more than just a newspaper; it has been a symbol of community strength and unity. I believe that its legacy will endure, and a new chapter will begin.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to me. I am committed to keeping you informed throughout this transition. Thank you for your understanding and unwavering support.

Sincerely,
Lloyd Green Jr.
