Alphonso M. Martinez, 84, of Sacramento, passed away peacefully at his home on March 1, 2026, surrounded by family. Al was born in Willows, CA, on January 28, 1942, to Frances Ortiz and Maurice Martinez.
Al raised his family in his hometown of Maxwell, CA. He was an active member of the volunteer fire department and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and playing and coaching softball. After his children were grown, he relocated to Sacramento.
In retirement, Al cherished time spent with his mother, siblings, children, and grandchildren, rarely missing an opportunity to cheer them on in their activities. He was a puzzle enthusiast and enjoyed woodworking, gardening, and going to concerts. Alongside his mother, he was an avid San Francisco 49ers and Giants fan.
Al was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Arthur Martinez.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years Mary Ellen; children, Al Martinez Jr., Tina Martinez (Lori), and Mary Carvalho (David); grandchildren, Michael Martinez (Annamarie), Michaela Rosellini (Matthew), and Mckenzie Boyce (Drake); great-grandchildren, Madison and Grayson Martinez; sisters, Betty Gardner and Linda Jones; and many nieces and nephews.
Mass will be held at 10:00 am on Thursday, March 12, 2026, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Maxwell. A reception will follow at the Legion Hall.
