COLUSA, CA (MPG) – Colusa County residents can dispose of old passenger vehicle tires at no cost during five Tire Amnesty Days scheduled throughout March.
The free collection events will take place from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 7, 14, 15, 21 and 28 at the Colusa County Road Department, 5714 E St., Williams. The program is open to Colusa County residents only.
Each resident may drop off up to nine tires. Tires must be from passenger cars or trucks and must be removed from rims. Commercial and agricultural tires will not be accepted.
Colusa County Public Works Director Colt Esenwein said the event offers residents a safe way to dispose of unwanted tires.
“Dumping tires illegally creates serious environmental and health risks for our county,” Esenwein said. “By hosting this Tire Amnesty event, we’re giving residents a simple, safe way to clear out their old tires and do their part in keeping our community healthy.”
County officials said proper tire disposal helps prevent mosquito breeding grounds, reduces fire hazards and preserves landfill space.
Residents who need to transport more than nine tires, up to 20, must contact Colusa County Public Works at (530) 458-0466 to obtain a Transportation Exemption before the event.
The Tire Amnesty program is sponsored by Colusa County and the Rural Counties’ Environmental Services Joint Powers Authority. Funding comes from a grant through the California Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery, also known as CalRecycle. County officials said funding is limited and they may end free disposal if grant funds are exhausted.
