COLUSA COUNTY, CA (MPG) – Voters in Colusa County will see a full slate of state, federal and local races on the ballot during the Direct Statewide Primary Election scheduled for Tuesday, June 2, 2026, according to the Colusa County Elections Office.
The primary will include contests for major statewide constitutional offices, legislative seats, local county positions and a special federal election process tied to the vacancy left by the late U.S. Rep. Doug LaMalfa.
County Clerk-Recorder and Registrar of Voters Cristy Edwards said the upcoming election cycle will be more complex than usual due to overlapping district lines and election timelines.
“This is a very unusual election,” Edwards said, noting that voters will be participating in two separate congressional processes at the same time.
Following recent redistricting, Colusa County shifted from Congressional District 1 to District 4. However, because LaMalfa’s death occurred after redistricting was completed, the state directed counties to conduct the vacancy election using the former District 1 boundaries. At the same time, the June primary will proceed under the new District 4 lines.
Edwards clarified that while Gov. Gavin Newsom has called an Aug. 4, 2026, special election date, that date would serve as the general election only if no candidate receives a majority vote in the special vacancy primary. The Special Vacancy Primary Election for the congressional seat will be held June 2, the same day as the Statewide Direct Primary Election.
Edwards said the county is still awaiting guidance from the state on whether the vacancy election and the regular primary may be consolidated, as the two elections follow different timelines. She noted there is also the possibility that two separate elections could be conducted on the same day.
State and district offices on the June ballot include governor, lieutenant governor, secretary of state, controller, treasurer, attorney general, insurance commissioner and Board of Equalization District 1. Voters will also nominate candidates for U.S. Representative District 4 and State Assembly District 4. The nonpartisan office of superintendent of public instruction will also appear on the ballot.
