RedHawk Baseball Suffers Setbacks at Nipomo Tourney

NIPOMO, CA (MPG) – With most schools off for Spring Break last week, Colusa took the opportunity to venture south to face some unknown competition at the Nipomo Baseball Tournament where they found some tough going finishing 1-3 over the three days.

In their first game on Apr. 1 against Bishop Montgomery of Torrance, the RedHawks got a good effort on the mound from Julian Mendiola, but couldn’t provide any run support as they fell 0-1 to the Knights.Mendiola put in five and two-thirds innings of work scattering six hits, but the one earned run he yielded proved to be the difference.

Sutter Moss doubled and Bo Coronado singled to account for the RedHawks’ only hits in the game.

Yet, Colusa bounced back the next day in the first game of a twin bill with a 14-4 win over Pacheco from Los Banos.

In a game where the RedHawks were the beneficiaries of nine free passes, Moss was 4-for-5 at the plate as was Will McCoy, while Lucas Price had an RBI double.

Peyton Humphrey went the distance on the hill.

However, Colusa could not maintain its momentum in the nightcap as it managed only one hit in a 0-2 loss to Cabrillo, a team from Lompoc.

Luke Kalfsbeek suffered the hard luck loss despite striking out seven and not surrendering a hit, as the two walks he issued in the bottom of the third came in to score on an error in the outfield.

In their final game of the tournament on Apr. 3, the RedHawks again struggled with the bats in a 0-6 loss to Dublin.

Seth Kalisuch finished with a pair of hits, while Moss, Kalfsbeek and Adan Travis each had onColusa (13-3, 6-0) looked to get back to its winning ways this week with a tough series against Sacramento Valley League rival Durham that began on the road Wednesday and concludes this afternoon at home.
