 Pierce Boys Set Pace at SVL Track Meet

WINTERS, CA (MPG) – It was an especially good day for the Pierce varsity boys at the second Sacramento Valley League track meet as they came away with a convincing win over the six other teams participating in the event.

Ending the meet with 12 top three finishes, the Bears outdistanced second place Live Oak 143-115 and ran away from the rest of the field.

Pierce’s Nathan McIntosh swept the sprint races at the second SVL meet in Winters on Mar. 20.

Pierce sophomore Nathan McIntosh was the fastest man on the track last Wednesday afternoon as he swept the short sprints winning the 100 meters in a time of 11.3 and then followed up with a mark of 22.6 in the 200.

McIntosh additionally anchored the Bears’ 4×100 relay team, which won in a time of 44.6 and also included teammates Drew Burnum, David Aguirre and Erick Montanez.

Montanez (53.8) tied for first in the 400 meters, and Adrian Carillo (19.7) won the 110 meter hurdles, while Aguirre raced to two third place finishes in the 200 and 400 in times of 23.0 and 55.6 respectively.

In the throwing events, the Bears took the top two spots in the shot put with Daniel Bustamante posting a mark of 40’2”, just ahead of Alfonso Orozco whose best toss was 39’3”.

Then in the discus, Humberto Esqueda (144’6.5”) claimed second place and Orozco (110’4”) was third.

Rounding out the top Bear finishes was Alex Orozco (18’10”) who set a personal best in long jump to claim third.

Also making some noise in the varsity boys competition was a trio of Colusa RedHawks, with Isaiah Travis winning the high jump with a mark of 5’6”, Charlie Santana finishing second in long jump with a leap of 19’1.5” and Aiden Selover crossing the line third in a time of 11.5 in the 100 meters.

Both the Bears and RedHawks finished mid-pack in the varsity girls division despite getting some solid individual efforts.

Colusa’s Rajdeep Shoker was double winner in the distance races with times of 6:07.3 in the 1600 and 13:11.0 in the 3200.

Teammate Danica Chavez also won her event, the 400 meters, setting the pace at 1:07.5.

In other events, the RedHawks saw Josslyn Garcia (57.8) take second in the 300 meter hurdles, while Grace Graybill had a pair of third place finishes in the 100 and 300 hurdle races with subsequent times of 19.6 and 59.7.

For the Bears, Karina Grajedra had a busy day in which she won the 800 meters (2:49.3), took second in the 1600 meters (6:13.7) and third in the 400 meters (1:11.2).

Pierce’s Macey Myers collected a pair of second place finishes in the 400 (1:08.3) and high jump (4’4”) to go along with a third in the 200 (29.7), while teammates Jamie Figueroa (14.1) was third in the 100 meters and Carla Moreno was second in the 800 meters (2:52.6).

Both the Bears and RedHawks are in Durham today for Colusa’s Vern Regier Invitational.
