Basketball Roundup

Boys:

Princeton 67 – Providence (Orland) 42 (1/30)

Princeton 68 – Loyalton 66 (1/31)

Riding a 10-game streak, the Eagles (19-1, 10-0) are closing in on their first 20-game win season since 2007-2008 after picking up a pair of Pioneer League victories last week.

Princeton’s Tito Reynoso hit the go-ahead three to give the Eagles a 68-66 win over Loyalton on Jan. 31.

At home against Providence, Princeton had little trouble with the Lions as three starters finished in double figures.

Junior Andrade paced the Eagles with 22 points, Corywn Roberson recorded a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds, while Tito Reynoso added 11 points to the total.

Yet, the more exciting game was on the road against the Grizzlies, who last year swept Princeton in three games, including the finals of Northern Section Division VII Championship.

Although the Eagles had beaten Loyalton back on Dec. 5, this time around was not only for outright control of the PL, but to gain the upper hand come playoff seeding.

In a tense game that went down to the wire, Reynoso hit the go-ahead three to give Princeton a two-point advantage with just seconds remaining and, although the Grizzlies had two decent chances to change the outcome, the ball would not drop.

For the second straight game, Andrade dropped 22 points, while Corwyn Roberson had a 15-point, 18-rebound double- double.

Chris Roberson also logged a double-double with 11 points and 10-boards, and Nate Ramirez ended with 11 points as well.

Having clinched at least a tie for the league title, the Eagles traveled to play Paradise Adventist Academy on Feb.6 and host Westwood on Senior Night this evening.

Colusa 67 – East Nicolaus 50 (1/30)

Colusa 61 – Willows 43 (2/2)

The RedHawks continued to roll through Sacramento Valley League with easy road wins over East Nicolaus and Willows last week.

In Trowbridge against the Spartans, Peyton Humphrey posted a season-high 24 points, and Isaiah Travis finished with 15 to lead Colusa.

Rounding out the week in Willows, Travis came away with a 23-point, 15-rebound double-double, while Landon Humphrey pitched in with 15 points.

Still unbeaten in the SVL, Colusa (19-5, 11-0) closed out the regular season by hosting Pierce on Tuesday night, making its way to Paradise on Wednesday, before heading to Durham tonight.

Pierce 51- Winters 46 (1/30)

Pierce 36 – Durham 58 (2/2)

After winning five straight including one last Tuesday night in Winters, the Bears saw their streak come to an end at home against Durham.

On the road against the Warriors, Drew Burnum registered his seventh double-double of the season with a 20-point, 10- rebound effort, while Gavin Guynn ended the night with 13 points after going 4 for 4 from beyond the arc, and Tony Maldonado pulled down 11 rebounds.

Things didn’t go as well for Pierce against the visiting Trojans as they averaged just nine points a quarter in the game.

Burnum had another nice outing finishing with 16 points and seven boards while Guynn pitched in with seven points.

This week, the Bears (10-16, 7-5) faced the RedHawks in Colusa on Tuesday night and are in Live Oak tonight for their SVL finale.

Girls:

Colusa 56 – East Nicolaus 23 (1/30)

Colusa 68 – Willows 33 (2/2)

Having reached the 20-win mark for the first time since the 2011-2012 season, the RedHawk girls extended their win streak to 14 straight after downing East Nicolaus and Willows last week.

Colusa’s Alena Sanchez had 10 points in the RedHawks win over Willows on Feb. 2.

After giving up 18 points to the Spartans in the first quarter last Tuesday night, the defense went to work, holding the visitors to just five points for the rest of the game.

Danica Chavez had a game-high 18 points and Aliah Ramirez added 12 points in the victory.

Colusa followed up with its highest point output of the season in a blowout over Willows as four players finished in double figures.

Chavez and Ramirez finished with 16 points apiece, while Elle Faris and Alena Sanchez each tallied 10.

To round out SVL play, the RedHawks (20-5, 11-0) hosted Pierce on Feb. 6, traveled to Paradise on Feb. 7, and return to their home court tonight to square off against Durham.

Pierce 39 – Winters 45 (1/30)

Pierce 48 – Durham 36 (2/2)

In its first game last week, the Bears came up short against the visiting Warriors, but bounced back nicely in Durham against the Trojans.

Jaslene Condrey tossed in 12 points, Letzy Ambriz had 11 and Magali Jauregui finished with 10 points in the loss.

Ambriz turned in another solid effort in the win over Durham having ended the game with 16 points.

Now 12-13 overall and 6-6 in the SVL, Pierce took on Colusa Tuesday, then returns to Natalie Corona Gymnasium for its final regular season game against Live Oak tonight.

Princeton 21 – Loyalton 55 (1/31)

Princeton struggled last week on the road against the first-place team in the Pioneer League.

Mackenzie Wills scored a team-high seven points and brought down six rebounds, but the Grizzlies were too much for the Eagles to handle.

\Princeton (5-9, 3-3) looked to get back on track this week on Tuesday against Paradise Adventist ahead of tonight’s game, which sees Westwood come to town.
