Pierce Girls Can’t Match-up with Colusa

ARBUCKLE, CA (MPG) – A poor shooting night did in the Bears as they fell 24-51 to the rival Colusa RedHawks in a Sacramento Valley League contest last Tuesday night.

Pierce’s Magali Jauregui tries to get past the defense of Colusa’s Danica Chavez in the Bears’ loss to the RedHawks on Jan. 16.

In addition to hitting just 18 percent from the floor, Pierce was also at a disadvantage on the boards given the RedHawks’ height advantage in the post and were out-rebounded 56-16 by Colusa.

While Pierce’s Magali Jauregui led the Bears with 13 points, the night really belonged to Colusa’s Aliah Ramirez, who finished with a 16-point, 12-rebound double-double.

In addition to Ramirez, nine others broke into the scoring column, including Danica Chavez, who finished with 12 points despite being saddled with early foul trouble.

Still, the game was truly won on the boards, which were dominated by the RedHawks with McKenna Azbill pulling down a game-high 15, while Addision Lay corralled another 10.

However, to its credit, Pierce bounced back three days later to down Live Oak 44-26 behind 13 points from Letzy Ambriz and 10 more from Leah Charter.

This week, the Bears welcomed Paradise to Natalie Corona Gymnasium on Monday, prior to their hosting East Nicolaus on Wednesday.

Colusa’s Aliah Ramirez looks to pass in front of Pierce’s Letzy Ambriz in an SVL game in Arbuckle on Jan. 16.

For its part, the SVL’s top team, Colusa, held off a challenge from Durham and emerged with a 55-51 triumph at home on Jan. 19.

Chavez led all scorers with 21 points, while 10 from Ramirez and nine from Olivia Huskey helped offset a balanced effort by the Trojans.

Winners of nine straight, the RedHawks (15-5, 6-0) were in Winters on Monday and will celebrate Homecoming in a game at Don Bransford Gymnasium tonight.
