Lady Bears Let One Slip Away

Pierce’s Jaslene Condrey looks for a baseline shot in the Bears’ 41-43 loss to Willows on Jan. 3

ARBUCKLE, CA  (MPG) – Despite leading for the first 27 minutes of their Sacramento Valley League opener against Willows, a young Bears squad could not hold off the visitors and as a result fell 41-43 to the Honkers on Jan. 3.

Even though Pierce had a 10-point advantage at halftime, its struggles on the boards and against the press allowed the Honkers to overtake the Bears in the final period.

Regardless, Pierce did have two chances to tie with six seconds remaining although it was not to be, as the ball would not drop.

Sophomore Jaslene Condrey finished with 15 points and five rebounds, while the team’s only senior, Letzy Ambriz dropped in 11 points.

The Bears’ Magali Jauregui dribbles up the court in an SVL game against Willows on Jan. 3.

Two other sophomores made significant contributions including Magali Jauregui with eight points and seven assists along with Leah Charter, who cleared seven boards.

The Bears had a game in Winters on Jan. 5, although no information was provided.

This week Pierce (6-8, 0-1) continued SVL competition when they traveled to Paradise on Monday, hosted Durham on Wednesday, then makes the trip to Trowbridge tonight to face East Nicolaus.
