Arts Council Launches Rural Photo Project

COLUSA, CA (MPG) — The Colusa County Arts Council will launch “In the County,” a community-led documentary photography project that explores rural life in the Sacramento Valley from February through May 2026. Activities will take place at locations across Colusa County.

Interested residents may attend drop-in information sessions at the Arts Council gallery on Jan. 10, 2026, from noon to 2 p.m., and Jan. 15, 2026, from 6 to 8 p.m. Visitors will meet the project director, learn about the program and available photography resources, and may sign up in person.

In the County invites community members to document the relationship between people and land in Colusa County through photography. Participants of all ages and skill levels will create a shared archive of rural spaces during the program. At the close of the project, the group will publish its work in a community photography zine.

The program centers on four group photo walks led by teaching artists Susan Knight and Donovan Lee, both experienced professional photographers. Two photo editing workshops will introduce participants to image editing techniques using Adobe Lightroom.

Participants who work with film will have two chances to develop their own black-and-white 35mm film in the Arts Council darkroom with project director and executive director Daniel LoPilato.

In April, illustrator, designer, and teaching artist LK James will lead two do-it-yourself zine-making workshops. Community members will select and arrange their photographs and produce a community photography zine using a Risograph duplicator.
