MAXWELL, CA (MPG) – To say that over the past decade Biggs has owned the Panthers on the football field would not be an understatement given that the two teams played eight times coming into last Friday night’s game and the Wolverines had won them all.
But with its offense firing on all cylinders and rolling up 420 yards, Maxwell broke the streak and exacted some revenge with a convincing 49-34 victory over Biggs in its Mid-Valley League home opener.
“We played well for three quarters of the game,” said head coach Lane Davis, “But we lost our momentum and let them back in the game until a big run from Tanner Vierra got it back for us.”
Vierra, with four carries for 112 yards and a touchdown, to go along with 17 tackles on defense, was one of many Panthers to have a big night against the Wolverines.

Biggs.
Quarterback Levi Velasquez, who completed 10 of 13 passes for 223 yards and five touchdowns, continues to improve and impress Davis, who said this about the senior, “Levi was outstanding. He threw some beautiful deep balls hitting his receivers in stride, then was very effective in the short passing game as well. Also, he’s a quiet guy so I like the way he is starting to take on more of a leadership role.”
Another Panther making a major contribution was Luke Pearson as the senior hauled in four passes for 89 yards and two touchdowns, rushed for another score, then according to Davis had some “amazing hits” defensively and picked off a pass for good measure.

34.
Celestino Corona, Rosendo Salazer and Vincent Orozco each caught touchdown passes as well.
Also standing out on defense was Landon Barrett, who returned from injury to led the team with 18 total tackles, a sack and a half and an interception to his credit.

Alex Krug had a third consecutive game in double digits for tackles, ending the night with 12.
Now 3-2 overall, the Panthers made the trek to Quincy to play the Trojans (2-2, 0-1) this evening.
