Colusa Tennis Edges Paradise

PARADISE, CA (MPG) – It came down to the wire, but the RedHawks left “the Ridge” last Thursday with an emotional 5-4 victory over the host Bobcats.

Evenly matched, the two teams split the singles matches with Colusa getting wins from No. 3 Charlotte Stever (6-3, 6-2), No. 4 Ilyali Cruz (6-1, 6-1) and No. 6 Lizeth Ramirez (6-2, 6-6, (9-7)) to set up the drama on the doubles’ courts.

Colusa’s Charlotte Stever won both her singles and doubles matches last week as the RedHawks stayed unbeaten in
the SVL.

Having lost the No. 1 doubles match, the No. 2 pair of Stever and Ramirez downed their opponents 8-2 to keep things even and leave the outcome in the hands of the No. 3 duo of Cruz and her new partner, freshman Vivian Trejo.

However, things went the RedHawks’ way in what Coach Melissa Michalk described as a “nailbiter” as Cruz and Trejo Triumphed 8-6.

Prior to its match in Paradise, Colusa defeated Willows 7-2 on Sept. 15.

In singles’ play, No. 1 Janell Garcia (6-2, 6-2), No. 2 Emily Lopez (6-2, 6-1) both prevailed, as did Stever (6-1, 6-2), Cruz (6-1, 6-0) and No. 5 Perla Olazo (6-3, 4-6, 10-8).

Stever and Ramirez (8-2) along with Cruz and Ximena Dominguez (8-4) logged doubles’ wins.

Now 3-0 in Sacramento Valley League play, the RedHawks squared off against Shasta Charter Academy in Redding on Sept. 23 and were on the road in Durham on Sept. 25.
