Football Roundup

Maxwell 71 – Mt. Shasta 14

Despite being down four starters, the Panthers erupted against the visiting Bears, rolling up 511 yards of total offense including 379 on the ground.

Maxwell’s Levi Velazquez had a huge game in the Panthers’ win over Mt. Shasta, rushing for 163 yards and five
touchdowns in addition to throwing for 132 yards and another score.

Leading the barrage was Panther quarterback Levi Velazquez, who carried 10 times for 163 yards and five touchdowns in addition to completing five passes for 132 yards and another score.

Vincent Orozco had his best night of the season offensively, rushing nine times for 93 yards and a touchdown, Luke Pearson ran four times for 67 yards, finding the end zone once, then also caught a pass for a touchdown, while Tanner Vierra made the most of his two totes, striking pay dirt twice.

Vierra was a major contributor on both sides of the ball, also catching two passes for 90 yards and making 14 tackles on defense as well.

However, for the second week in a row, Alex Krug played like a man possessed finishing the night with 16 total tackles, an interception and two fumbles caused to his credit, again drawing praise from his coach, Lane Davis.

“Alex plays with a chip on his shoulder and continually challenges himself,” Davis said. “He plays the game the way I think it should be played whether in practice or under the lights.”

Another Panther defender wreaking havoc was Macklin Kuska, who accounted for 11 tackles and jarred loose two fumbles, while Davis also commended Colt Montgomery for his play, which amongst other things included making nine tackles.

Orozco and Rosendo Salazar each had an interception as Mt. Shasta turned the ball over six times.

Maxwell (2-2) has a much tougher task tonight when it entertains Biggs (2-2) in its Mid-Valley League opener.

Colusa 7 – Gridley 27

Although it didn’t result in a win, if there is such thing as a moral victory, the RedHawks scored one last Friday night at home as spearheaded by a valiant effort from their defense, they went toe-to-toe with the unbeaten Bulldogs.

Colusa’s Hunter Purvis put forth an impressive effort in the trenches as the RedHawks hung tough against Gridley.

“It was a battle for sure,” said Colusa head coach Mason Niccum. “I was really proud of our guys for staying in it for four quarters and giving them everything we had.”

Niccum specifically singled out the play of Asa Selover, who ended the game with 11 total tackles, along with Hunter Purvis, who neutralized Gridley’s best lineman all night long and also made 11 tackles.

Although the RedHawks didn’t get much going statistically on offense, accruing just 100 yards, sophomore Nick Alvarez, called up for Colusa’s game against Yreka, continued to perform well, scoring Colusa’s lone touchdown.

This week the RedHawks (1-3) open Sacramento Valley League play when they welcome Pierce to Larry Yeghoian Field tonight.
