Traveling Circus Dominates at Western Open Skeet Tournament in Stockton

By MPG Staff

STOCKTON, CA (MPG) – The Stockton Trap and Skeet Club was buzzing with excitement as it hosted the prestigious Western Open from July 25 to 27. A total of 309 entries competed across five events, drawing top talent from across the country. Known as a key evaluation tournament ahead of the California State Skeet Championship in early Aug., the Western Open delivered high-level performances under ideal summer conditions.

With sunny skies and temperatures hovering in the mid-80s and none of the usual early summer winds, the stage was set for remarkable scores. Spectators filled the stands at each field to watch their favorite shooters in action, including legendary skeet shooter Bill Hanes.

Fresh off their National Youth Championship wins in Las Vegas earlier this month, Traveling Circus shooters made their mark in their 2025 season debut. The team included James Cooley, Dustin Wurm, Gage Locatelli, Drake Locatelli, Raegan Parisio, Amelia Wilder, James DeKay and Lily Knapp joined by squadmate Lyndsey Ellis.

Traveling Circus shooters posted standout scores in the 12-gauge event. Dustin Wurm and Gage Locatelli each shot 96/100, while Lily Knapp followed closely with a 95/100. Raegan Parisio posted a 93/100, Lyndsey Ellis shot 92/100, and James Cooley rounded out the group with a solid 91/100, showcasing the depth and consistency of the squad.

In terms of honors, Dustin Wurm was crowned the Sub Junior 12-gauge Champion, with Gage Locatelli earning Sub Junior Runner-Up and Drake Locatelli finishing in third. Raegan Parisio captured the Junior Runner-Up title and placed third in the Lady division. James DeKay took third in the Junior category, and Amelia Wilder followed with a fourth-place finish. Lyndsey Ellis tied for fourth among Lady competitors.

The team continued to shine in the 20-gauge event. Lily Knapp claimed the Class D Championship and finished as the Runner-Up Lady Champion. Dustin Wurm added another title to his weekend as the Sub Junior 20-gauge Champion and tied for fourth overall, while Raegan Parisio placed fifth in the Lady category.

The success of the Traveling Circus squad was not only a testament to the shooters’ hard work, but also to the dedicated supporters and the hosting Stockton Trap and Skeet Club, whose hospitality and organization made the event seamless. “A special thank you to our supporters Colusa Industrial Properties, Yolo Gun Club and Golden State Gun Club. Your continued backing and the use of your facilities make a huge difference for these young shooters. We couldn’t do it without you,” said Traveling Circus Instructor, Bob Maffei.

The Traveling Circus will be heading to the California State Skeet Championship on Aug. 8 through 10. “The Traveling Circus squad is ready for the challenge and welcomes continued community encouragement as they set their sights on state titles,” said Maffei.
