Roberson, Sweet Soar at NSCIF Track Finals

COTTONWOOD, CA (MPG) – Competing amongst the Northern Section’s top track athletes last Friday at West Valley High School, Princeton’s Chris Roberson and Pierce’s Thomas Sweet finished first and second respectively in the triple jump to lead the local contingent.

It was an especially notable performance from Roberson, who participated in just four invitationals this season prior to the final meet.

The Eagles’ senior, who set a personal record in the triple jump on May 14 at the NSCIF Division IV championships with a mark of 43-03.25, fell short of his career best, but his 43-01 was enough to surpass the competition.

Given the recent return of Princeton’s track program, Roberson’s ascent in the sport is notable, a tribute to not only his athletic ability, but according his coach, Lisa Pence, his drive to succeed as well.

“His development has been remarkable,” said Pence. “He pushed himself so hard as an athlete and I couldn’t be any prouder. I truly wish we would’ve brought the track team back earlier for these kids.”

With the win, Roberson qualified for the CIF state meet, which is being held today, unfortunately the same day as Princeton’s graduation.

As a result, Roberson declined his berth, something that Pence said was not an easy choice.

“We are so bummed. It’s such a hard choice for a senior to have to make, but also one of the many real world decisions he will face.”

Roberson also medaled in long jump, finishing fourth with a leap of 21-02.5.

However, Roberson’s conflict with his graduation opened up an opportunity for Sweet, the NSCIF Division III champion in the triple jump.

Having finished second to Roberson with a mark of 43-03.75, Sweet, a junior, will represent the Bears today at the 105th CIF State Track and Field Championships at Buchanan High School in Clovis.

Also contending in an individual event at the section finals in Cottonwood was Colusa senior Benji Granados, who took fourth in the 3200 meters after running a personal best time of 10:02.56.
