Rice Growing Again at School

Maxwell, CA (MPG) – Rice is once again growing in the school field, marking a successful return of an agricultural tradition thanks to strong community support and student involvement.

This hands-on project is part of the school’s Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) program, which offers students real-world exposure to agricultural practices. This year, senior Alex Krug was selected to lead the rice field operation, working closely with local industry experts to manage the crop from planting to harvest.

A number of community partners contributed essential resources to make the project possible:

  • Colusa County Farm Supply provided fertilizer and chemicals
  • Rob Shadley prepared the ground and donated seed
  • Jason Lee handled GPS leveling for the field
  • Richter Aviation contributed aerial application services
  • Randy Wilson managed aqua application
  • Glenn-Colusa Irrigation District (GCID) repaired a faulty gate, enabling this year’s planting

In addition to cultivating rice, funds from the program’s rice account will support two student employees this summer. These students will help maintain the school’s livestock, orchards, and garden boxes, and assist with operations at the new student-run vegetable stand.

School staff and students expressed their gratitude to the many contributors who continue to support agricultural education and leadership development.

“Projects like this wouldn’t be possible without the incredible backing of our local ag community,” said a school representative. “We’re proud to offer students meaningful, career-focused experiences that connect the classroom to the field.”
