Colusa Baseball Splits with East Nic

COLUSA, CA (MPG) – After walking it off against visiting East Nicolaus on Apr. 29, the RedHawks hit the road to complete the season series on May 2, only to see the Spartans come from behind to force the split.

Colusa’s Adan Travis pitched two scoreless innings in relief as the RedHawks held off East Nicolaus at home on Apr.
29.

Playing the first game at home, the RedHawks jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first when Kane Nall singled to plate Lucas Price, who reached on a leadoff hit and then swiped a bag to move into scoring position.

Then after Jace MacKaben singled to get aboard, Colusa created some havoc on the base paths with Nall scoring on an error and MacKaben crossing the plate following another Spartan miscue on the same play.

Yet, East Nicolaus hung around and came back to tie the game at 3-3 in the top of the fifth with a chance for more, but Colusa picked off the Spartan runner trying to steal second to extinguish the threat.

After a scoreless sixth, pitcher Adan Travis worked around two walks in the top of the seventh to shut down the Spartans and set the stage for some heroics in the home half of the frame.

RedHawk second baseman Ashton Gutierrez runs off the field after tagging out East Nic’s William Miller in the fifth
inning of a game played in Colusa on Apr. 29.

With one out, Mason Gutierrez singled bringing Carlos Franco to the plate.

After Gutierrez stole second to put himself in scoring position, Franco lined the next pitch to left to lift the RedHawks to their fifth victory of the season.

MacKaben finished with a pair of hits including his ninth double of the season to lead Colusa, while Price and Travis combined for the win on the mound.

However, it was a different story last Friday where a disastrous sixth inning saw the RedHawks’ surrender six hits and eight runs and ultimately fall 9-13.

Colusa catcher Mason Gutierrez (22) had a big day with the bat on May 2, going 3 for 4 with a triple and a double in a
loss to East Nicolaus.

MacKaben stayed hot, going 3 for 4 with two more doubles, as did Gutierrez, who tripled and doubled as part of his 3 for 4 day.

Travis picked up a pair of hits and drove in two runs, while Rowdy Moore launched a two-run home run.

With its record now even in the Sacramento Valley League at 5-5, fourth place Colusa closed out the regular season this week by making the short trip to Arbuckle to play Pierce on Tuesday before returning home to entertain the Bears today.
