WINTERS, CA (MPG) – Participating in the first Sacramento Valley League track meet of the season on Apr. 9, the Pierce boys and Colusa girls dominated their respective varsity divisions as the teams coped with the 85 degree temperatures last Wednesday at Sellers Field in Winters.

In besting its closest opponent by 115 points, the Bear boys came away with wins in the hurdle races, relays and jumping events in addition to the shot put and the 800 meters led by a pair of double winners in JR Figueroa and Humberto Esqueda.
Figueroa captured both the 110 meter and 300 meter hurdles in times of 17.1 and 45.5 respectively, while Esqueda won the shot put with a throw measuring 44-11, then also edged teammate Thomas Sweet in the triple jump by reaching the mark of 39-11 in fewer tries.

To complete the sweep in the jumping events, the Bears had Drew Burnum (5-6) win the high jump and Jonathan Vazquez Hernandez (20-9) take first in the long jump.
Pierce’s Adan Beltran (2:13.6) prevailed in the 800 meters and then was part of the winning 4×400 relay team, which posted a time of 3:46.7 and also included Noah Sucevich, Figueroa and Nate Macintosh.
Adding to the Bears’ point total was the 4×100 relay team, comprised of Shawn-Nicholas Geronco, Tony Saavdera, Damian Navarro and Jamison Porter, who crossed the line first in a time of 46.4.
For the Colusa boys, who finished fourth on the day, Benji Granados continued to run away from the field in the distance races, taking the 1600 in 4:43.8 and the 3200 in 10:42.0.
Also recording first place finishes for the RedHawks was Abimael Fuerte (11.5) in the 100 meters and Emiliano Guzman (54.7) in the 400.
Meanwhile, Colusa’s varsity girls topped their opponents behind double winner Rajdeep Shoker, who ran a 5:56.5 in the 1600 and 13:31.2 in the 3200.
The RedHawk girls also got wins from Kendall Marengo (12.9) in the 100, Shaheen Orr (18.5) in the 100 meter hurdles and from their 4×400 relay team, which included Danica Chavez, Josslyn Garcia, Marengo and Itzel Cruz and finished in a time of 4:31.0

Pierce’s lone individual triumph came in the 800 from Karina Grajedra with a time of 2:45.9.
Next up for both Pierce and Colusa is a trip to Chico today where they will compete against 27 other teams at the NorCal Small School Invitational.
