Panthers on 5-Game Roll

MAXWELL, CA (MPG) – With three shutout wins last week, the Maxwell baseball team ran its record to 11-2 overall and 4-0 in the Mid-Valley League.

Maxwell’s Levi Velazquez slides into home safely, underneath the tag of Williams’ catcher Jose Valdez in a game
played on Apr. 8.

Playing an MVL series against Williams on Apr. 8 and Apr. 11 respectively, the Panthers put a combined 48 runs on the board in two wins, then additionally squeezed in a 3-0 victory over Mt. Shasta on Apr. 9.

In Williams for its first game last week, Maxwell broke the game open in the third inning after scoring 13 runs in the frame.

Eddie Izquierdo had a big day at the plate finishing 2 for 4 with four RBI and three runs scored to lead the way.

Williams’ Leo Hernandez leads away from third as Maxwell’s Massey Baker stays close.

Levi Velazquez finished 2 for 3 and knocked in three runs, while Massey Baker and Wyatt Roach each had a pair of hits as well.

Velazquez also got the nod on the hill and went two innings before giving way to Tanner Vierra, Brody Jones and Landon Barrett, who each tossed an inning in relief.

Traveling to Mt. Shasta City the following day for a non-conference game, it was a completely different story, albeit a much more impressive win for the Panthers.

Senior Massey Baker took control on the mound going six and a third innings in which he struck out seven and scattered three hits before yielding to Vincent Orozco who retired the final two batters of the game.

Orozco, Lucas Bowen and Yahir Alcaraz each had two hits apiece.

The Yellowjackets’ Rudy Valdez takes a swing during a game against Maxwell on Apr. 8.

Statistics from the second victory over the Yellowjackets were not available.

Winners of five straight, this week Maxwell (10-4, 4-0) had a showdown with Biggs, another unbeaten team in the MVL, on Monday at home before hitting the road to face the Wolverines on Thursday.
