Maxwell Baseball Sweeps Portola

The Panthers’ Wyatt Roach throws a pitch in the second game of a doubleheader against Portola on Apr. 2.

MAXWELL, CA (MPG) – Having suffered its first setbacks of the year two weeks ago against Etna, the Panthers bounced back to sweep Portola in a doubleheader to open Mid-Valley League play on Apr. 2 at home.

As it has been so far this season, pitching was paramount, as Maxwell sent Massey Baker to the hill in the first game and the senior delivered, going all five innings in the 10-0 run-rule shortened victory where he surrendered just one hit while striking out nine.

Baker also helped his cause going by 2 for 2 with an RBI, while Vincent Orozco finished 2 for 3 and knocked in a run as well.

Meanwhile, Eddie Izquierdo had a hit and drove in a pair of runs with Yahir Alcaraz also recording a hit and an RBI.

Maxwell first baseman Alex Krug takes the pickoff throw in the Panther’s win over Portola on Apr. 2.

Pitching by committee in the nightcap, the Panthers held off the Tigers 5-2 to complete the sweep.

Orozco got the nod and went four innings striking out six before giving way to Wyatt Roach, who tossed two scoreless before Alcaraz retired the side in order to end the game.

At the plate Orozco stayed hot, going 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI, while Colt Montgomery went 2 for 3.

Maxwell’s Yahir Alcaraz retired the side in the seventh inning to earn the save in the Panthers’ 5-2 win over Portola
on Apr. 2.

Alcaraz, Roach, Alex Krug, Brody Jones and Landon Barrett each collected a hit apiece in the win.

Ranked No. 10 in the Northern Section, Maxwell (8-2, 2-0) made the short trip to Williams on Apr. 8, and headed to Mt. Shasta for a non-conference game on Apr. 9 before returning home to complete the season series against the Yellowjackets today.
