Colusa Girls, Boys Soccer Post 1st Round Wins

COLUSA, CA (MPG) – In a doubleheader played on Feb. 20 at home the No. 3 seeded Colusa girls kicked off the afternoon with a 5-0 shutout win over No. 6 Maxwell, while in the nightcap, the No. 4 RedHawk boys prevailed 3-1 over No. 5 Hamilton City in a pair of Northern Section CIF Division III playoff matches.

In a non-conference meeting back on Jan. 9, Maxwell played the RedHawk girls to a draw, but such was not the case last Thursday as Colusa left nothing to chance.

Lizbet Ayala led the charge after recording a hat trick and assisting on another goal, while Janell Garcia and Itzel Cruz each scored once in the win.

Following the girl’s match the Colusa boys took the pitch and after a somewhat slow start, Cesar Cruz put the RedHawks in front in the 34th minute with the first of his two goals.

In addition to Cruz’s brace, the RedHawks got an additional goal from Eric Gonzales to put the Braves away.

This week the Colusa teams swapped opponents when the girls traveled to meet No. 2 Hamilton City, while the boys made the short trip to face No. 1 Maxwell.

Both matches were played on Feb. 25, with the winners advancing to the championship match on Mar. 1 at sites that had yet to be determined by the Pioneer Review print deadline.
